Traditionally, 28 April is observed around the world as Occupational Safety and Health Day - a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and a right to work.
The theme of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2023 is Safe and healthy working environments as a fundamental principle and right at work. The main objective of this event in 2023 is to draw public attention to the need to respect workers' rights to a safe working environment, including by promoting a positive safety culture at work.
It is no coincidence that the issue of creating a safe working environment has been included in the ILO's list of fundamental principles of workers' rights. For this reason, ILO Convention No. 155 on Occupational Safety and Health (1981) and Convention No. 187 on the Promotion of Occupational Safety and Health (2006) have been added to the list of fundamental ILO instruments.
Fundamental principles and rights at work now include: the elimination of all forms of forced labour; freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; the effective prohibition of child labour; safety and health at work; and the effective elimination of all forms of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. A positive occupational safety and health culture means that both management and workers value and strive for a safe and healthy working environment. A positive occupational safety and health culture is based on involvement, which means that all parties are actively involved in the continuous improvement of occupational safety and health. Where there is a strong safety culture, workers will not hesitate to raise concerns about possible safety and health hazards or occupational risks, and management will proactively work with workers to find reasonable, effective and sustainable solutions to problems that arise.
The celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work promotes a global culture of prevention in the field of occupational safety and health of employees.
